KEY THEMATICS - Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Super Blocks, Tactical Urbanism, Soft Activism, Care Neighbourhood, Urban Acupuncture
OPEN STREETS 2022 - The Mariti(e)me neighbourhood is a very densely populated area. The lack of qualitative public space and scarcity of private terraces and gardens lead to the urban experiment of the summerstreet. At the start of the pandemic, Filter Café Filtré collaborated with local residents to transform the street to a safe space for residents of all ages to rest, eat, play, chat, bike, meet…
In this year's 3rd edition of the summerstreets, the program and scale of the interventions has grown. Filter Café Filtré partnered up with Kanal, Ultima Vez, Cultureghem, Brussels 2030, Clean Cities… and what started as one street is upscaled to a complete neighbourhood. This summer, seven streets will consequently be opened for neighbourhood activities as experiments to appropriate the street as a public space.
AN ALTERNATIVE WAY OF CITY MAKING - These tactical interventions go hand in hand with a design vision for the future. With our imagination-atelier we rethink the street together with inhabitants and develop a future vision and image. These future imaginations of the streets serve as a dialogue tool to introduce conversations on the quality of public space between inhabitants and city officials. Together, they are meant to show alternatives and shift the dominant position of the street as a space of mobility to the street as a space of many layers.
SUMMERSCHOOL 2022 - This year, Filter Café Filtré is organising a summerschool of five days, aimed at investigating the potential of the OpenStreets low traffic neighbourhood for urban transformation. The goal is to develop a narrative on the scale of the low trafic neighbourhood and its surrounding 'PLUS'axes. To arrive at an action plan for incremental transformation and a future imagination for every one of the seven streets in the OpenStreets program. Together with a team of practising architects, inhabitants and artists we will develop this narrative and work within this context of urban experimentation: how can the street give an inclusive answer to social and ecological needs? How do we work towards this future? Who can collaborate?
JOIN THE TEAM! Apply here before the 15th of August.
