Chaque année, nos étés deviennent de plus en plus chauds. En ville, la fraîcheur est devenue un bien précieux. Pouvoir trouver des endroits ou se rafraîchir lors des journées de canicule est devenu indispensable. Lors des vagues de chaleur, les nombreuses surfaces de béton et d’asphalte retiennent la chaleur et empêchent le refroidissement nocturne. Les quartiers les plus densément peuplés et bâtis, tels que Molenbeek, sont particulièrement touchés par ces îlots de chaleur. Avec un manque de jardins privés et de climatisation, nombreux sont ceux qui n’ont pas d’autre choix que de se réfugier dans les espaces publics.
Comment pouvons-nous renforcer les lieux de rafraîchissement existants et les rendre plus accessibles? Saint-Rémi détient peut-être la réponse. En été, il est agréable de s’attarder à l’intérieur et à l’ombre de cette haute église en pierre. On peut donc imaginer que l’église soit complétée par une nef latérale verte, dotée d’un toit de plantes grimpantes. Des niches vertes peuvent former des points de repos, à l’abri de la chaleur torride. L’eau de pluie provenant du toit de l’église pourrait s’écouler vers l’aire de jeux située derrière l’église et procurer un effet de refroidissement ludique. Les bancs en bois du parvis seraient alors occupés, tout au long de la journée, par des parents bienveillants, des couples en discussion ou encore par de vieux amis, tous profitant de cette ombre si agréable.
